Choosing the right foundation

The ground, building loads and site access determine the solution.

Concrete slab

A continuous concrete base can suit heavier layouts, wet rooms or tiled finishes. Excavation, reinforcement, moisture protection, curing time, drainage and floor levels need coordinated design.

Pad-and-beam

Designed pads support a beam and floor structure. This can reduce excavation or concrete use in suitable conditions and provide a ventilated void and service routes. Accurate pad positions, moisture protection and floor detailing are important.

A site-specific decision

Neither approach is automatically suitable. Ground conditions, drainage, trees, loads, services and access must be assessed by the relevant designer. Other engineered solutions may be appropriate; the final foundation is confirmed through technical design.
